Job Purpose:
Maintaining performance expectation for the EHS function. Promotes a climate that stimulates and motivates colleagues and management to participate in the preservation of the environment and in the protection of the health and safety of colleagues. Integrates the environmental health, safety, and loss prevention function with other areas of site management.
Requirements:
Grade 12/ Matric or equivalent
Tertiary qualification in EHS management or equivalent.
Experience & industry knowledge:
Required:
At least 5 years’ work experience (2 in Pharma EHS Industry)
Experience in quality and regulatory compliance within a cGMP facility
Program and project management
Participation in developing a departmental budget and monitoring expenditures for multiple projects & funding sources.
Preferred:
Working knowledge of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing related legislation
Experience in having faced successfully local and/ or international quality audits
Experience in general business management within a commercial environment.
Responsibilities:
Routine Activities:
Promotes a climate that stimulates and motivates colleagues and management to participate in the preservation of the environment and in the protection of the health and safety of colleagues.
Provides professional reply on reports or requests of regulatory agencies.
Reports non-compliance issues to management and provides recommendations for improvements.
Assess risks across site and mitigates, actions and close out.
Prepare internal communication concerning impact of activities or products on people or the environment.
Promotes continuous improvement in EHS performance.
Integrates Environment, Health, Safety and Loss prevention function with other areas of site management including human resources, operations, logistics, finance and quality assurance.
Assist potential EHS impact by:
Participates in preparatory studies for new projects, installations, machinery and the process changes providing input on issues relating to environmental, health and safety impact
Assist management in managing risks: i.e. in identifying risk, defining acceptance limits, maintaining action plans, coordinating and auctioning the implementation and follow up of these actions
Participates in accident incident investigations
Maintain waste reduction and pollution prevention programs
Promotes continuous improvement in safety and environmental performance defined by the best available but economically viable technology
Consult with relevant experts both internally and externally to ensure that best practices are implemented.
Develop and maintain EHS programs, procedures and work instructions that comply with the requirements of national and local legislation.
Implement the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard
Assist in maintaining contracts and permits, discharge conditions, reports, records, correspondence to regulatory agencies, regulatory agency inspections, spill control plans and emergency procedures
Assist in self-assessments and audits of facility operations in conjunction with review of the relevant regulatory requirements
Coordinate with internal and external auditors during facility audits
Assist in maintaining the health and safety risk assessment and environmental impact assessments for the facility
Ensure that EHS representatives and other inspections are conducted timeously.
Business Management
Shared accountability for achieving the site’s tactical plans and mitigation of any risk to the site operation including workflow, ethics, quality, finances, regulatory compliance and other material company requirements
Identify and continuously present key opportunities and synergies that will improve and/ or expand the operation within own and/ or other departments
Participate in departmental and/ or site wide projects
Participate with the site management team in proactively mitigating risks and find solutions where possible
Effective budgeting, invoice and expense management of assigned small projects
Technical Competencies required to perform this aspect of the role:
Computer Literacy
Technical report writing skills
Standard Operating Procedures
Basic EHS principles
Quality management systems and documentation
